Legacy Promotion Ireland, an organisation of Irish Charities is promoting the benefits of leaving money to a favourite charity when making a will.

Irish people are often complimented for their generosity in giving to worthwhile causes, particularly in helping after a major world disaster such as a famine or tsunami. We are less successful in giving to charities in our wills. Compared to other countries such as the UK or US, there has not been a tradition of legacy giving.

St. Vincent’s, as a founder member of Legacy Promotion Ireland, is helping to raise awareness of the benefits of legacy giving.

In 2011 Legacy Promotion Ireland has run an extensive advertising campaign building on a similar promotion in 2010. The key message is that after family and friends are taken care of we might have some scope to leave a gift, no matter how small, to make a difference after we’re gone.

UCD Medical Society continues its great tradition of raising money for worthy causes with a fundraising day on October 6th.

The UCD Medical Society is in its 102nd year of existence which is a remarkable success story. Equally notable however is the generosity that these future doctors demonstrate in organising a very extensive fundraising day each year.

Last year over 700 students took part and among the beneficiaries St. Vincent’s Hospital received €4,000 from the collection. The collectors present a dramatic sight in their brightly coloured tee-shirts throughout Dublin.

The fundraising day for 2011 is taking place on October 6th and is led by the society’s auditor, Lorraine Murphy. They are looking to emulate the success of previous years and no doubt they will.

Despite his health problems over many years and debilitating operations too numerous to mention Peter is constantly looking to help others. He has an amazing network of people throughout Ireland and overseas who are captivated by his energy, enthusiasm and generosity.

Peter & Josephine’s latest venture was a major Country Music Extravaganza in Rooskey. They persuaded a tremendous line-up of artists to give their time and a wonderful event was enjoyed by a full house in the Shannon Key West Hotel.

After the function they presented a cheque for €10,000 for cancer care in St. Vincent’s. This is truly a remarkable success by a remarkable couple. This brings Peter’s total fundraising to over €100,000 for many causes. Little wonder that he is a Hall of Fame winner at the People of the Year Awards.
