On the 12th Anniversary of the death of Linda O’Connor from Belmullet, County Mayo, 12 of her family and friends covered 1,200 miles (run/walk/cycle) in the month of March. The idea to do this was stimulated by Linda’s son Nathan to mark his 18th birthday.

Rachel McBride set up an iDonate fundraising page for this event, with funds to be divided between Oncology care here in St. Vincent’s (where Linda was looked after during her battle with Liver Cancer)  and Cara Iarrais in Belmullet. A fantastic total of €8,052 was raised and St. Vincent’s are delighted to receive €4,026.

Linda’s Son Nathan (18) is 1 of the 12 and he is doing his Mum proud and is an inspiration. This was something he wanted to do to mark his mum’s Anniversary and to give back to the people who looked after his Mum during her battle with Liver Cancer.

  5. Movember and more for Pancreatic Cancer

Sami Bouakkaz and his friend, Daniel Forde, undertook a challenging plan to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer Care and Research in St. Vincent’s. Sami’s father is currently being treated in the hospital.

Their objective was two-fold; to raise funds and to raise awareness of Pancreatic Cancer.

As well as the normal Movember activity of growing a moustache, they also committed to a fitness test of completing 200Km, running, cycling and walking, during the month.

The outcome was a highly valuable donation of €1,120 for this vital area of medical focus in St. Vincent’s.

It must be said that, for Sami, the result was even more creditable as he had dislocated his shoulder in a fall at Halloween.

Well done Sami and Daniel and our sincere thanks to all who supported your great effort.

  6. O’Neill Family 2,000kms for Pancreatic Cancer Research

In the middle of the most challenging environment of Covid-19, the O’Neill family set themselves a challenge that would be daunting at the best of times; to walk/run 2,000 kms to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research in St. Vincent’s. The fundraising was in memory of their beloved husband and father, Noel, who had died just four months previously.

15 family members from Kildare, Cork, Wexford & Sydney, collectively took part in the challenge while remaining within the Covid guidelines.

Amazingly they didn’t just achieve their objective but surpassed it, completing a distance of nearly 2,700 kms; an outstanding feat.

In the process the family raised €10,300 for this vital medical area. It is an enormous contribution to our capacity for addressing Pancreatic Cancer and we are hugely grateful to everyone involved.

The picture below shows some of the family members on one of their long walks along the banks of the canal in Maynooth.

We recommend supporters of St. Vincent’s view a programme on RTE 1 this Friday (All Walks of Life, RTE 1 Friday 12th February 2021 at 8.30pm). It is an amazing story of courage and generosity in the face of enormous challenges.

David Crosby, a recipient of a double-lung transplant, wanted to put something back for the opportunity that had come to him and set himself a challenge.

Participating in multiple marathons David raised almost €41,000 to date, for related research in St. Vincent’s. Most unusually, in these events he was joined by his Consultant, Dr David Healy of St Vincent’s.

At the present time we all need uplifting stories and this certainly is one.

    Thank you David.

In April last year, Wayne O’Driscoll from Bling Hunters set up a Frontline Heroes Challenge, which was a virtual event to fundraise for different hospitals and St. Vincent’s Foundation was invited to participate in this initiative. Bling Hunters put this event together to show support to all the frontline staff for putting their lives at risk every day to keep us safe.

This challenge was a virtual run, walk, treadmill, cycle or any form of exercise where you can record your kilometres. It ran until the end of December 2021.  A number of individuals also set up fundraising pages on iDonate to contribute to this event.

Bling Hunters donated a total of €6,000 and several individual fundraisers raised a total of €3,635.

In summary, we are extremely grateful to Wayne O’Driscoll and all the individual fundraisers who took part in this event for St. Vincent’s and contributed a total of €9,635.00 for this most important cause.

  9. Move for Maria fundraiser

On Tuesday 12th of January as his Mum Maria was taken into ICU suddenly to help her fight Covid-19, Karl Walsh decided to do something extraordinary. He committed to running 10K, each day, for 30 days consecutively to raise money for the ICU to boost the hospital response to Covid 19.

Specifically, management of ICU identified the opportunity for specialist staff in ICU to complete an international standard post-graduate qualification in Intensive Care in UCD as having the greatest opportunity for patients to benefit from Karl’s huge endeavour.  The cost of the course for each staff member is €8,200.

Karl highlighted the particular relevance of helping his Mum and others in ICU in that he had been an ICU patient as a new-born baby and his Mum was a tower of strength in enabling his recovery at that time.

  10. McCann Family Fundraiser at St Anne’s Church Mullaghbuoy, Co Louth

In order to celebrate Christmas Eve 2020 local singers, musicians and readers from Mullaghbuoy, Co. Louth provided a Carol & Prayer service on the 21st December. This evening of song was organised by McCann family & friends. In the past their uncle Frank McCann sang at the church, with his beautiful and powerful voice. Having lost him in 2019 the family wanted to do something inspired by his legacy and, as he was cared for at St. Vincent’s Hospital Dublin, they decided to raise funds for St Vincent’s Foundation; specifically cancer care in the hospital

The recording was available to watch online from Christmas Eve morning and the family asked that those who enjoyed it might donate to this cause.

The piano was played by Susan McCann, singers were Aoibhéann, Naoimh, Gavin & Cormac McCann. Well known and celebrated local musicians Zoe Conway (fiddle), John McIntyre (guitar) and their children Fiona (harp) & Eoin provided the beautiful musical accompaniment.

Our sincere thanks to the McCann Family and all who supported this event, which contributed €1,280 for Cancer Care here in St. Vincent’s.
