  8. Movember and more for Pancreatic Cancer

Sami Bouakkaz and his friend, Daniel Forde, undertook a challenging plan to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer Care and Research in St. Vincent’s. Sami’s father is currently being treated in the hospital.

Their objective was two-fold; to raise funds and to raise awareness of Pancreatic Cancer.

As well as the normal Movember activity of growing a moustache, they also committed to a fitness test of completing 200Km, running, cycling and walking, during the month.

The outcome was a highly valuable donation of €1,120 for this vital area of medical focus in St. Vincent’s.

It must be said that, for Sami, the result was even more creditable as he had dislocated his shoulder in a fall at Halloween.

Well done Sami and Daniel and our sincere thanks to all who supported your great effort.

  9. O’Neill Family 2,000kms for Pancreatic Cancer Research

In the middle of the most challenging environment of Covid-19, the O’Neill family set themselves a challenge that would be daunting at the best of times; to walk/run 2,000 kms to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research in St. Vincent’s. The fundraising was in memory of their beloved husband and father, Noel, who had died just four months previously.

15 family members from Kildare, Cork, Wexford & Sydney, collectively took part in the challenge while remaining within the Covid guidelines.

Amazingly they didn’t just achieve their objective but surpassed it, completing a distance of nearly 2,700 kms; an outstanding feat.

In the process the family raised €10,300 for this vital medical area. It is an enormous contribution to our capacity for addressing Pancreatic Cancer and we are hugely grateful to everyone involved.

The picture below shows some of the family members on one of their long walks along the banks of the canal in Maynooth.

  10. All Walks of Life

We recommend supporters of St. Vincent’s view a programme on RTE 1 this Friday (All Walks of Life, RTE 1 Friday 12th February 2021 at 8.30pm). It is an amazing story of courage and generosity in the face of enormous challenges.

David Crosby, a recipient of a double-lung transplant, wanted to put something back for the opportunity that had come to him and set himself a challenge.

Participating in multiple marathons David raised almost €41,000 to date, for related research in St. Vincent’s. Most unusually, in these events he was joined by his Consultant, Dr David Healy of St Vincent’s.

At the present time we all need uplifting stories and this certainly is one.

    Thank you David.
