Laurence Keenan Jnr. from County Cavan undertook the most arduous fundraising effort when he decided to cycle from Malin Head to Mizen Head, to raise money for C.F. in St. Vincent’s. This epic journey is over 600km.

From this huge effort Laurence raised €1,000 and we are indebted to him on behalf of our patients.

Best of luck to St. Vincent’s University Hospital employee Kasia Marcinowska, who is doing the Everest Base Camp trek in October. This is a 3 week trek in Nepal from Lukla to the Base Camp of Mount Everest.  On the way to the Base Camp Kasia will face different challenges such as altitude effects and will experience extreme weather conditions.

Kasia who works in Medical H.R. Dept. in St. Vincent’s, is fundraising for Cancer Research here in St. Vincent’s. In her fundraising page she states “I’ve created this page because I want to support cancer research in Ireland. I believe that thanks to this research more lives can be saved sooner and even the smallest help can make a difference. I also want this initiative to add another meaning and motivate me during the Everest Base Camp trek which my team and I will start on 16th October 2017. Please help me to support Cancer Research in St. Vincent’s

If you would like to support Kasia’s fundraising efforts, please donate via her Everyday Hero fundraising page on https://give.everydayhero.com/ie/everest-base-camp-2

On the recent occasion of his 60th birthday, Kevin McCormack, from County Laois and his family had a novel and generous plan to raise money for the Liver Unit in St. Vincent’s. Guests at the birthday were requested not to bring gifts but to donate whatever they wanted in a collection bucket on the night.

Kevin also approached many businesses for additional support. Many other individuals, aware of the fundraising, also contributed.

A total of €3,735 was raised from all these efforts and Kevin & Una and their family came to St Vincent’s to present the proceeds.

The list of donors is too long to acknowledge individually, but special thanks are due to Portarlington Credit Union and AIB Bank, Portlaoise.

Pictured are the McCormack family – Claire, Joe, Kevin Snr., Una, Kevin Jnr. & Sandra presenting proceeds to John Hickey.

  7. Phage Bake Sale for the Liver Unit

The Liver Unit in St. Vincent’s was the beneficiary of a cake sale with a difference held in the APC Microbiome Institute in University College Cork on 28th April 2017. All the cakes were designed to resemble phages (officially known as Bacteriophage) and as well as being an important fundraiser, marked the 100th Anniversary of the discovery of the phage. The report of the event in the Irish Examiner describes phages for us non-scientists as ”viruses that only attack bacteria” and that interest in phage therapy is growing internationally as a method of treating bacterial infections.

The event in U.C.C. also celebrated the 10th anniversary of a Liver transplant for one of the colleagues in APC.

Sincere thanks to all for this novel event which raised €540.25 for this great cause.

  8. Christine Kearney’s Easter Raffle for Breast Cancer

One of our most consistent fundraisers for Breast Cancer in St. Vincent’s is Christine Kearney. Over the last eight years, she and her friends Catherine and Katie have raised almost €32,000 for this critical medical area.

Her Easter Raffle has become a much anticipated event each year. It is organised with wonderful costumes (as you will see from the photos below), and brings a great sense of enjoyment to the hospital.

This year the event had, again, a most successful result with a final total of €2,580.00.

On behalf of all our patients, we say a massive Thank You to Christine for this vital contribution.

Christine Kearney, a recovering cancer patient, is organising her annual Easter Raffle in the hospital.

The raffle will take place on Thursday 6th April at 3.30pm with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Care here in St. Vincent’s.   Christine and her family will be selling tickets in the hospital (main reception area) throughout that day.

In the meantime, we also have tickets available from St. Vincent’s Foundation on 01-2215065 or from the main reception desk in St. Vincent’s University Hospital.

Tickets are €2 a line or 3 lines for €5 and there is a lovely selection of prizes, which are on display at main reception in the hospital.

All the prizes were generously organised by Christine and her friends Catherine & Katie.

Christine’s raffles have been a huge contributor to this vital cause and we hope that this year will be equally successful.
