On Tuesday 12th of January as his Mum Maria was taken into ICU suddenly to help her fight Covid-19, Karl Walsh decided to do something extraordinary. He committed to running 10K, each day, for 30 days consecutively to raise money for the ICU to boost the hospital response to Covid 19.
Specifically, management of ICU identified the opportunity for specialist staff in ICU to complete an international standard post-graduate qualification in Intensive Care in UCD as having the greatest opportunity for patients to benefit from Karl’s huge endeavour. The cost of the course for each staff member is €8,200.
Karl highlighted the particular relevance of helping his Mum and others in ICU in that he had been an ICU patient as a new-born baby and his Mum was a tower of strength in enabling his recovery at that time.
