My Legacy.ieDid you know that 66% of people living in Ireland do not have a Will?

Solicitors across Ireland are offering €50 Will consultations during the third Best Will in the World Week 21st – 25th October 2013. Participating solicitors can be viewed on www.bestwill.ie.

St. Vincent’s Foundation is a founding partner of MyLegacy.ie. MyLegacy organisation, in partnership with 400 solicitors, is encouraging people to make a will and consider leaving a gift to their favourite charity, regardless of size and after family and friends have been looked after. See www.mylegacy.ie for a list of participating solicitors and charities.

In direct support of St. Vincent’s, we are delighted that our own solicitor, ManganBest will in the world O’Beirne, provides a free consultation for people thinking about how to deal with their estate after their death. Mangan O’Beirne, based in Donnybrook, Dublin can be reached on 01-6684333.

Recent research on charitable giving, leaving gifts in wills to charities and will making in Ireland shows that:

    • Ireland was ranked as the second most charitable country in the world in the 2011 World Giving Index

    • The Index showed that 75% of the Irish population gives money to charity every month (while 38% volunteer time and 65% help strangers)

    • However only 34% of adults in Ireland have made a will and of those who have a will, it is estimated that only 10-12% have included a gift to charity

    • Having a will appears to be a function of age as 82% of those over 65 years have a will whereas only 51% of those aged 45 – 64 years of age and 26% of those aged 35 – 44 years have a will

    • Of those who don’t yet have a will, 30% would like to leave a gift to a charity in their will and this desire is highest among 18 – 24 year old respondents

    • Charitable donations in wills are the foundation of many Irish charities generating nearly €26 million per year

Remember St. Vincent’s when making your Will

We are grateful to the management in Boliden Tara Mines who supported and contributed to this fundraising effort.

Again our thanks also to all the Underground Electricians and staff in Boliden Tara Mines who were associated with this fundraising.

Brian Waldron from Ballyhaunis Co Mayo organised a Head-Save in early August in support of the Liver Unit in St. Vincent’s and raised the terrific sum of €3,600 from the event.

He prepared for the shave by growing his hair for 17 months.

Brian’s Dad, Tom, had a liver transplant in St. Vincent’s in 2005 and he and all the family pitched in to make this such a success.

Our pictures of Brian show the “before”, the “after” and the “in-between”!

We are grateful to all the Waldron family who are pictured presenting the proceeds.

In memory of Sandra Dunne R.I.P. from Donadea, County Kildare who lost her battle with Cystic Fibrosis in January of this year, her husband Amaury Lousse, the Dunne family, relatives and many friends have undertaken numerous fundraising events to fundraise for the C.F. Unit here in St. Vincent’s

Among the events they organised were the Meath Garda Spin 10km Cycling Race in Trim on 27th April last and a Fun Run on 19th May. In addition, many family members and friends took part in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon. In a novel fundraising exercise they requested that Poor Box contributions stipulated by Naas & Trim Courts would be committed to C.F. in St. Vincent’s.

In an enormous effort lead by Amaury, Sandra’s brother Brian, and her sister Laura they raised a total of €34,400 to improve facilities for C.F. patients in St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Amaury along with Sandra’s parents Sarah & Joe, Sister Laura, Brother Brian, Aunt Bridget and sister-in-law Ann Marie, called in on 15th August to present the fundraising proceeds. It was a particularly emotional visit for the family and we thank them for making that difficult journey. Our thanks, also, to Prof. Charles Gallagher and the many members of the C.F. multi-disciplinary team who knew, loved, and cared for Sandra and who came to meet with the family on their visit.

Jillian McNulty, a patient of the Cystic Fibrosis Unit in St. Vincent’s Hospital, lead a group of cyclists from Carrick-on-Shannon to Dublin over a 4 day journey. Starting out on Friday June 21st they arrived triumphantly into St Vincent’s on Monday 24th to a welcoming audience of staff and supporters. Jillian and her team were blessed with good weather for the trip.

Supported along the way by fundraising events, the group raised €4,500 which is shared between C.F. Ireland and C.F. care in St. Vincent’s University Hospital.

As well as our gratitude to Jillian and the other brave cyclists, we express our thanks to Jillian’s parents, Frank and Fionnuala, her family, friends and the families and friends of all the participants. It was a poignant event for some of the cyclists who themselves had lost loved ones to C.F.
